What a colour is
Colours were not inherent in objects, but rather manifestations of how they affected light. As the sun shines on the world, it is not bringing out the red in an apple, the green in a leaf. The apple and the leaf are bringing the colours out of the sunlight. (The Ten Most Beautiful Experiments, Chap. 3: Isaac Newton - What a Colour Is)
